Nottingham Regatta 15th May

The mens senior 8 and Lewis Todd made the long trip to Nottingham to test themselves. The 8 coxed by the indomitable Maggie Hawkyard won their semi final at IM3 and finished 5th in the final where only 5 seconds covered 2nd place to 5th. Lewis gave a good account of himself racing at Sen 1 sculls coming in 5th in that final.

Junior Inter Regional at Nottingham 23rd April

Quick report on the Inter regional event that some of the girls attended at Nottingham on 23rd April.

The event is a regatta composed of the 12 rowing regions of England, with points awarded depending on the placement of the crews. (12pts for a win, 11 for 2nd and so on to 1 for 12th).

The standard is high and it is a great experience to row against these crews and at a 6 lane international standard rowing course. The squad were chosen to represent the Western region in 3 events, a Junior 15 double scull (Emilia & Clarice), a Junior 16 double scull (Josie & Livvy) and a Junior 16 eight (Izzy, Megan, Karrie (from Paignton), Lucy, Emilia, Maia, Livvy, Josie and Ella).

I was very pleased with how the girls rowed in tough races and although we didn’t reach any “A” finals , were competitive. The J16 double finished 6th, the J15 double 4th in the B finals. The 8 was 9th fastest in the heats, and although were disqualified at the start of the “B” final (due to a clash, not helped by my selection of where to seat the girls in the boat, one side probably stronger than the other), I think we would’ve finished 4th or possibly 3rd. These points helped the West region finish 9th overall, the highest for a long while.
